The Historical Center in the 1970s

San Luis de la Paz, Gto. Saturday, August 23, 2014.  This morning, we found an old picture from the historical center in the 1970s. Forty years make a big difference in the architecture of a city, including ours. After checking it, we realize how different it looks today.

For mentioning some changes since then:

The Main Square still had side streets where cars traveled, and its floor was made with a different material. For the young people, it was in 1994, under the administration of the Municipal President Antonio Alvarado, that the park was remodeled and was turned into a pedestrian area.

The Matamoros Street had divisions with plants which created two lanes. Later, the separations were withdrawn and it became a one way street. At present time, it serves as a two way street again.

The San Luis Rey Parish had only one tower and its atrium was surrounded by metal works. The last mentioned were withdrawn at the end of the 70s, with the idea to make the church more accessible to people. The second tower began to be constructed in the 90s and it is still being worked on.

247 Years of the Expulsion of the Jesuits is Celebrated

San Luis de la Paz, Gto. Saturday, August 23, 2014.  On June 25, we celebrated 247 years of the decree of expulsion of the Jesuits from New Spain. The episode, which happened in 1767, made the town of San Luis de la Paz to protest and rise in arms. It was one of the few places in the country where this occurred. The mutiny was appeased by the colonial army, and the punishment to those who participated was severe. Some were exiled and others condemned to the death penalty. One of those executed was a woman, Ana Maria Guatemala, of which there is a picture in the Raices del Terruno Gallery, a permanent exhibition at the Ludovicense Cultural Center. In 2007, a staging of the event was held in the San Luis Rey Parish. We share pictures of the play here with you.

Our Queens of the Fair from the 1990s

San Luis de la Paz, Gto. Wednesday, July 31, 2011. In the early 1990s, our fair queens were Eideen (1991), Sagrario (1992), Marcia (1993), Cynthia (1994), Viviana (1996), Flor (1997), Estefania (1998), and Lorena (1999). It was in this period that a space was conditioned for the fair itself, at the corner of Velasco Ibarra and Mexico 68. This includes an area for rides, a building for the craft exhibition, an arena for the rooster fights, and a People’s Theater, which was small for the size of our population.

NOTE: If you have more information or photos from the 60s, 70s and 90s queens, your help is welcomed.  Write us to: webmaster@garciahdez.com

The Chapel of the Lord of the Column

San Luis de la Paz, Gto.  July 30, 2013.  At 315 Hidalgo Street, between Bravo and Ortiz Dominguez, is located a decaying construction that was used as a chapel in honor of the Lord of the Column. This was one of the countless chapels that were built in San Luis de la Paz during the Colony, usually by Otomi Indians, who had the habit of having oratories in their homes. In general, the name of the chapels was based on an episode of the passion of Christ. Don Angel Lino Arredondo (+), who was chronicler of the city, confided us that human remains were found there in the 20th century, so perhaps it served as tomb for some of the believers.
